  5.        Mansion when used in conjunction with Tabby can send and
  6.        receive network messages as part of the international Fido
  7.        Net.  FidoNet is an amateur network where electronic mes-
  8.        sages can be exchanged all around the world.  The word
  9.        amateur cannot be emphasized enough.  The Sysops who trans-
  10.        ports these messages, for the most part, carry the brunt
  11.        of the cost of this transport.

  13.        Keep this cost in mind when responding to network messages.
  14.        Do not send purely private messages.  Do not send commer-
  15.        cial announcements or advertisements.  Do not send trivial
  16.        or inflammatory messages.

  21.        If you do not want a message to be sent out to the network
  22.        and to the rest of the world, just enter the word NOECHO
  23.        on the first line of the message, followed by a carriage
  24.        return.  The word NOECHO has to be in all caps with no
  25.        spaces and further has to be the only thing on the first
  26.        line.

  28.        Because it takes several days for your response to reach
  29.        the addressee, you may wish to make use of the quoting
  30.        feature in Mansion.  Use the command "RQ" to selectively
  31.        move lines of the original message into your response.
  32.        Judicious use of this feature will allow other readers to
  33.        understand the context of your response.  Of course if
  34.        sufficient time has passed since the originator sent his
  35.        message out, he will thank you for including a quote of
  36.        the salient portions of his message, which he might other-
  37.        wise have forgotten.

  41.        Please understand your messages are going to be read by
  42.        hundreds perhaps thousands of people, none of whom can
  43.        see your facial expression or hear your tone of voice,
  44.        or even know you.  You should attempt to keep your mes-
  45.        sages direct, concise and friendly.  You don't want to
  46.        damage your worldwide reputation!

  48.        Because this board receives so many network messages, it
  49.        might be a good idea to start a text capture on your
  50.        terminal program and then issue a "RNC" command.  This
  51.        will scroll through the new messages quickly and allow
  52.        you to read them off-line where you can compose the
  53.        appropriate insightful and concise responses.

  58.        All commands used in Reading, Scanning, Responding,
  59.        and Editing messages are available separately in the
  60.        message board areas by issuing either the "H" or "?"
  61.        commands.  You might want to practice posting and
  62.        responding in the local message area until you become
  63.        familiar with the Mansion message handling system.

  65.        Unvalidated callers may read network messages, but 
  66.        not post or respond to network messages until they
  67.        have been validated.
